Farish A. Noor: Rev Up The Hate Machine
Rev Up The Hate MachineBy Farish A. NoorFor some time now a number of Malaysian academics, writers, NGO activists and public intellectuals have been warning of the slow yet inexorable rise of fascism here on our shores. They have warned time and again of the dangers of narrow, exclusive communitarianism that has become hegemonised in the daily politics of Malaysia; as well as the dangers of the politicisation of religion and its instrumentalisation at the hands of a minority of right-wing demagogues and hate-mongers.Yet, despite our efforts, the brickbats and nay-sayers have always been there to claim that our warnings were off the mark, hysterical and outlandish. Facism here?
Raja Petra: Respect Cannot Be Demanded; it must be earned
Respect cannot be demanded; it must be earnedRaja Petra KamarudinAli Al-Ahmed, the director of the Saudi Institute in Washington, wrote the following in his piece, Hypocrisy Most Holy, which appeared in The Wall Street Journal on 20 May 2005:"With the revelation that a copy of the Quran may have been desecrated by U.S. military personnel at Guantanamo Bay, Muslims and their governments -- including that of Saudi Arabia -- reacted angrily. This anger would have been understandable if the U.S.government's adopted policy was to desecrate our Quran. But even before the Newsweek report was discredited, that was never part of the allegations.
What Is Knowledge?
> In one sentence, how do you define "knowledge"?In view of "it is not the smartest or the strongest species that prevails, but that which is most adaptive", I have a one word definition for knowledge -- acumen. And if you wanted "acumen" expanded it is : sharpening one’s intuition (aka sense-making apparatus) [1] so that it energises [2] one to take the most effective actions [3] of a rainbow [4] of possible actions, in a diverse environment [5]
Most Harmful Malaysian Memes: Candidates
Memes are to mind, what genes are to body.Let's list here the memes that are candidates for "most harmful Malaysian memes".I'll start with one candidate:-1) That great reward comes from great struggleDoesn't even greater reward come from working smart? From adapting fast? From low resistance to learning, unlearning and relearning?Isn't struggle often used to rationalise a failure? And not learning faster from the failure? (i.e. wea

Malaysia, do we care enough?
I saw this on Brand Malaysia
Malaysia, do we care enough?
It must be said that all the lip service by Malaysian leaders about
a caring society is merely sweet nothings. Sweet to hear but nothing
done. Our country, Malaysia, has a very poor record of managing and
providing for the needs of disabled people, as it is. Often, we see
people parking in spots reserved for the disabled, and most buildings
are planned without taking into account the need for the disabled.
Often, there is no specially designed and designated toilets for them.
I was once confined to a wheelchair for a month after a severe track
accident caused a badly fractured leg. I know how difficult it is to
piss in a normal urinal when confined to a wheelchair, and getting
around is no joke either.

Canary Digital Wireless Hotspotter
Best Wi-Fi hotspot finder
Canary's hot spot finder is the best of the several stand-alone
Wi-Fi detectors that I've tried -- three of which I've gone so far as
to purchase. The Canary uses AAA batteries, rather than the button
cells that some detectors do (harder to replace in a pinch);
consequently it's not quite as svelte as some, but the extra goodies
are worth the chubbier, still-palmable housing. Canary's unit scrolls
across its 12-character LCD display the name, channel and signal
strength (4 bars is the highest) of the networks it finds, which makes
it truly useful for checking where your own access point's signal
reaches.

Interview with Bala Pillai about the New Malaysia.net
Kevin: Okay, let us get this started. You hear about citizen journalism in the media and see examples like this site and others such as Alwayson. Tell us Bala, What does citizen journalism mean?
Bala: media created by citizens, e.g. discussion forums, blogs etc. most media was created by citizens prior to the printing press - we're going back to that.
Bala: I remember in my village where I grew up in Malaysia. When there was no media there. When we needed to find out what was happening in the neighboring village, we’d send one of us over. He’d go over. And talk to the headman. Get the party platform from him. And on his way back he'd go have a haircut at that village's barber. And there he'd get the grapevine. And between the two versions he narrates to us...see that was media for us. That was news.
