I am writting this letter to the you because I was
hurt by the unfair pratices of racial discrimination
and work condition in the manufacturing industry.
This a story of how brutaly we are attack for our
beliefs, this must go out in the open here, as the
ministry of human resources is a dead horse which sits
on it industrial cases for years unend.
I was employed by a large chinese owned company in the
Bayan Lepas industrial zone in Penang Island. It was
not a very good offer but I had to take since the
economy was in a bad state in 1998.
I was offered a basic salary of 1600 and 200 as
transport allowance.I was offered a post of Engineer
for Machine Maintainance. But little did I know I will
never maintain any machines.
Instead I was ferrying operators with my personal
transport to do rework operations at various sites
some as far as sungai petani industrial estate. And I
was not allowed to claim mileage or compensation.I was
not paid allowances for staying up to 2 am sometimes
to finish the job at customers site.
Apart from that I was required to do meet with
customer to review the contract and make
modifications.
I was also asked to come out with Work Instructions
for operators.
Once when I was too overloaded I stayed in the plant
till early morning and fell asleep on the table.Next I
realised that the MD who was fully aware of the
ammount of job I was doing was shouting to me to wake.
The words he used was too painfull " YOU MALAYS ARE
ALL LAZY,COME TO WORK also can sleep."
The other chinese staff also echoed with contempt to
malay race and Islam.A few Indian staff also sided
with the chinese staff and made some fun of the Malay
race. The other malays did their work quietly or
pretended not to hear.Either they do not care or are
too afraid. I belive they are too afraid.
This incident started a whole lot more of realisation,
a malay staff who was sympathetic to me showed me a
the detailed remuneration scheme on the database. It
has very high racial bias the indian and chienese
received more money on a monthly basis and plus too
many incentives I did not receive or even know
existed.
On average they recived 60% more for the same job even
though they were came in after the Malay staff of the
same level.
And I know most of the malays do more work than any
chinese or indian.
Apart from that I was also the chinese management
overheard in Hokien which I can understand perfectly,
how the malay "ba&**ds" have supported by NEP and the
government and how they were getting back at them by
making pay in the workplace".There was very clear that
the chinese management did not mind indians of the
hindu faith but depised the Muslims of all races.
This was since this Muslims tend to go and pray 5
times a day, a total waste of time and productivity.
The muslims were also not invited to parties since
they do not drink and eat pork. They despised for our
beliefs.
It was first job and this experience shocked me.
One day the management went as far as prohibiting the
mulims from praying during working hours and the surau
was locked up.
Eventhough I am not a person who prays 5 times a day
but I felt this was a discrimantion against the basic
human rights of worship.
There some seriously out of place in Malaysia
today. The chinese and indian who today own most of the
capital in Malaysia is bullying the Malay comunity by
denying them their rightfull salary and promotion. They
work us to the ground and we lose almost all
meaningfull contact with our families.
If we ask for explaination, we are told you Malays are
Lazy, there is even a new spelling for Malay, Malazy.
It is not fair to continue to deprive us of our basic
rights at work, while our non Malay counterparts enjoy
our fruit of labour. We want equal acess to promotions
and salary.
I belive the governments has the obligation to make
public knowledge the salary paid to everyone, to
ensure there is no foul play and racial bias.
The only hope we have today is there are people like
MGG PILLAI who are liberal and belive all humans
should treated equally.Maybe it is not too much to ask
to be treated equaly.
There maybe many chinese and indians who look down on
Malays, but there are some who think us only as
another brother in human family, these people are only
hope for a Multiracial Malaysia.
I am sorry if what I wrote hurt anybody's feelings but
it is the sad truth of racial discrimantion against
the malays that goes on at the workplace and we must
accept and try get rid of it.It is not healthy for the
multiracial society here.
