Half-right half-wrong. Right that the Panchayat was organised to find a better
way to deal with netiquette violations in the community given that managing
the
community is more than full-time jobs and given that there is so much for
Malaysians to unlearn and learn on the costs of equity vis-a-vis online
communities.
Wrong that Yap was removed. He left of his own accord - there's proof in the
Sangkancil archives. About end-August/early September 1998, Yap left of his
own
accord after a prolonged dispute over the onus of proof required in corruption
allegations aired in Sangkancil about his close friend - I forget his name -
the then highly placed chap in Bank Negara who was later fired, and who then
went on to mouth the dubious statutory declarations against Anwar Ibrahim.
Last
news reports I saw up to about 6 months ago, Yap's friend is facing charges in
court over latter's misconduct while at Bank Negara. Mokhtar may or may not
have been dropped the charges in a an evidence barter exercise (often
disguised
to appear in Malaysia as a plea-bargaining exercise).
Yes, Yap was suspended for 2-3 days for gross Netiquette violations without
contrition -- I had more unbillable time to enforce Netiquette then -- before
he left of his own accord.
Anybody who disagrees that he left of his own accord is most welcome to check
the Sangkancil archives for that period. The online world is great at reducing
the ills of the "Chinese whispers" syndrome for those who become savvy with
its
tools. If I I have time, I'll dig up his parting message - would be about Sept
3 1998.
